R’ Avraham Mordechai Alter zt”l (Imrei Emes) would say:
“The Gemara states (בבא בתרא קמז.): ‘If the first day at the head of the year is hot (חמים), the entire year will be hot. If the first day is cold (קריר), the entire year will be cold.’ To the extent that an individual generates warmth in his Divine service on Rosh Hashana, to that extent will he be ardent throughout the year in his yearning for Hashem. It is Rosh Hashana that enables us to accept the yoke of the Kingship of Heaven throughout all the days of the year.”
