Many people have talked their way out of receiving a traffic ticket using all sorts of excuses, ranging from urgent emergencies to elaborate fabrications. But perhaps no one ever had a better, more heartwarming excuse than a woman from Crown Heights who found herself pulled over by a New York City traffic officer. Standing outside her open car window and watching her fumble nervously through her handbag for her driver’s license, the officer’s eyes caught sight of a picture tucked inside her purse - a photo of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, R’ Menachem Mendel Schneerson zt”l. Pausing, the officer looked at her and asked if she was a follower of that Rabbi. When she replied that she was, he calmly closed his ticket book and announced that he wouldn’t be giving her a ticket after all. Touched by her visible surprise, he offered to share the reason why, mentioning that while it was his absolute favorite story, he had never actually told it to a Jewish person before.

He explained that years earlier, he had served in the police escort that accompanied the Rebbe once a week to the Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, where the leader paid respects at the resting place of his predecessor, R’ Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn zt”l. During those trips, while the Rebbe was inside davening, the officer got to know some of the young chasidic men in the entourage. They were remarkably friendly, and as they chatted, the young men would share stories about the Rebbe’s extraordinary empathy and his endless devotion to helping people in need. Curious, the officer had half-jokingly asked his buddies one day if the Rebbe’s willingness to help extended to non-Jews as well. They assured him without hesitation that the Rebbe helped anyone who asked, warmly inquiring if he had a personal burden of his own.

That conversation stayed with him, touchingly close to a private pain he and his wife were enduring. Later, in confidence, the officer confided in one of the young chasidic men about their silent heartbreak. He and his wife had been married for nine agonizing years without children. They had exhausted their savings on fertility treatments and consulted world-renowned specialists, running around relentlessly for seven long years, only for doctors to finally deliver the devastating news that they had tried everything humanly possible and there was no longer any hope. The heartbreak was crushing, leaving his wife in constant tears and bringing the officer himself to a point of helpless weeping. Understanding his pain, the young man gently advised him to stand by the door of the Rebbe’s car during the next cemetery trip and simply ask the Rebbe for a blessing.

Taking the advice to heart, the officer positioned himself right at the vehicle’s door the following week. As the Rebbe stepped out, the officer nervously asked if he blessed non-Jews as well as Jewish people. The officer recalled with striking clarity how the Rebbe looked at him in that moment - not with distant detachment, but with the warm, deeply genuine gaze of an old friend. The Rebbe assured him that he tried to help anyone in need and instructed the officer to write down his name, his father’s name, his wife’s name, and her father’s name on a slip of paper so he could include them in his prayers. Though the officer found it slightly amusing to hand over a slip of paper covered in traditional, heavy-duty Irish names, he did so with a faint ray of hope.

What followed was nothing short of a miracle. Within a remarkably short time, his wife discovered she was expecting, and nine months later, almost to the day, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The medical team was flabbergasted, unable to find a rational explanation for the sudden turn of events, scratching their heads in disbelief when the officer attributed the joyous outcome entirely to a Rabbi’s blessing. The officer’s face glowed with pride as he reached the apex of his memory, revealing that he and his wife had named their newborn son Mendel in honor of the Rebbe. His wife had initially resisted, worried the name sounded neither conventional nor Irish, and their extended family strongly objected out of fear that the boy would face cruel teasing for carrying a uniquely Jewish name. But the officer stood firm in his gratitude. He reasoned that if his son ever came home upset about being picked on, he would use it as a profound teaching moment, reminding the boy never to mirror that hostility, but instead to treat others with unconditional kindness and love. He wanted his son to carry the story of his birth proudly, using it to show others that without a compassionate Jewish Rabbi named Mendel, he wouldn’t even be here today.

MASHAL:
While vacationing in Florida, Mr. and Mrs. Berger made a long drive to a distant restaurant to satisfy a sudden smoothie craving. Upon stepping out of the car, Mrs. Berger spotted a sparkling, custom-made piece of jewelry lying on the pavement outside. Recognizing its substantial worth, later estimated by a jeweler to exceed ten thousand dollars, her immediate concern was the owner’s inevitable anguish. She chose honesty, so she left her phone number with the restaurant manager in case anyone inquired.

The Bergers eventually returned to New York. Sure enough they soon received an international call from a Mr. Gold in England. Having desperately retraced his steps to the Florida restaurant with his wife, he obtained the Bergers’ contact details. Mr. Gold precisely described enough details of the jewelry to confirm his ownership. Delighted to help, the Bergers arranged for a relative traveling to England to hand-deliver the treasure.

Moved by this exceptional integrity and the profound Kiddush Hashem created, Mr. Gold asked if he could support a tzedakah in their merit. Mrs. Berger suggested a family she knew struggling with wedding expenses for their daughter (hachnasas kallah). Mr. Gold made a generous donation and shared the inspiring tale with friends. Inspired, they too eagerly contributed, fully covering the wedding expenses.

NIMSHAL:
The mitzvah of hashavas aveida can accomplish much more than just reuniting an item with its owner. It sends a reverberating message about the beauty of a Torah Jew and the mitzvos which hallmark his life.

Even though Hashem promised that the time would soon come when the Jewish Nation would return to the land of their heritage, Yeshaya HaNavi still famously equated the holy city of Yerushalayim to a barren woman devoid of children. From Hashem’s promise one would think that the Jewish people were on the mend and there was hope for their future. Therefore, why would they be likened to someone who has no future?

R’ Tzadok HaKohen zt”l (Pri Tzadik) explains that Hashem takes pride in every Jew’s accomplishments - whether it is large or small. In Hashem’s eyes, an unlearned shopkeeper can achieve the same level of greatness that a highly learned talmid chacham can, if his intentions are right.

Yeshaya HaNavi’s comparison of the Jewish nation to a barren woman seems as though it is denigrating the Jewish people, however, in reality it was a new kind of hope to the nation. Hashem understood the nation’s spiritual status, yet He still embraced them and promised to return them to their homes. One must never forget that Hashem always sees the full picture and takes every aspect of life into account. Just because someone appears low and unimportant, it doesn’t mean that he is, and vice versa.

In exile, Hashem saw that even in their low state, his children were taking “baby steps” toward bettering themselves, and not only did He accept their teshuva, He even took pride in them and promised to bring them back to Eretz Yisroel.

Rashi explains that the reason we may not reject an Egyptian convert is because we must have hakaras hatov for them having provided us a home in the days of yore. And although they took the opportunity to enslave us while we were there, still, at the end of the day, they allowed us to live on their land, and for that alone, some measure of gratitude is warranted.

A bochur once went to learn in the famed Yeshivah in Radin, and, upon his arrival in the Yeshivah, made his way to the house of the saintly Chofetz Chaim zt”l to give shalom and receive the tzaddik’s beracha. The Chofetz Chaim asked the bochur his name, and then inquired as to whether or not he had for himself an achsanya, a place to live in while he learned in the Yeshivah. The boy answered that he hadn’t. When he heard this, the Chofetz Chaim immediately got up, and, despite his advanced age, troubled himself to go out and arrange for him a proper achsanya, and didn’t rest until everything the bochur needed was taken care of. The astonished talmidim of the Yeshivah didn’t have the temerity to ask the Chofetz Chaim anything about it, but the tzaddik himself later explained his unusual involvement with the welfare of this bochur. It so happened that many years beforehand, during his many travels, he himself had been a guest in this boy’s grandfather’s home in Vilna. Therefore, since we find in the Torah that there is an obligation to show gratitude not only to those who benefited us, but to all their descendants as well, as evidenced by the Torah’s command to show gratitude to all Egyptians for all eternity for the fact that their forebears hosted us, the Chofetz Chaim felt himself similarly obligated to pay back his debt of gratitude to his benefactor’s descendant, and therefore took it upon himself to assist the bochur in any way possible!

As we approach Rosh Hashanah and the yemei hadin, the first thought that should enter our minds is: Hashem has given me a whole year of life - did I truly and wholeheartedly thank him, even once?! Only once we recognize the Aibeshter’s good to us can we approach the new year and hope to survive.

Why does the Torah instruct us to remember what Amalek did בלשון יחיד, when in reality all of Klal Yisroel was attacked? Also, when Hashem decided to destroy the דור המבול, it says, "ויאמר ה' אמחה את האדם" - I will erase them. So why, asks R’ Zalman Sorotzkin zt”l (Oznayim L’Torah), regarding Amalek is the task incumbent upon us?

Both questions can be explained with the following idea. Amalek wasn’t a one-time attack. Amalek symbolizes "מדר דר"; that ever-present attack on Klal Yisroel’s spirituality. He’s the archetype villain, היצר הרע, as the posuk clearly states in Yisro, "מלחמה לה' מדר דר". He plans his attacks by studying each person’s weaknesses and accordingly strategizes his battles, cunningly attempting to vanquish each Yid, one by one. Thus, the Torah uses singular form, so that each יחיד be forewarned and prepared to eradicate him. The דור המבול on the other hand wasn’t a יחיד battle, and as such, Hashem Himself did the deed.

The parsha closes with the words "לא תשכח", do not forget. Maybe al pi drush we can say a machshava. Earlier, the Torah teaches the halacha of שכחה. If one forgets a bundle of produce in the field, it must be left for the poor. Only the stalks that you already passed have the din of שכחה and not those you did not yet reach. Perhaps we can say that this teaches how to fight the milchemes hayetzer, AKA Amalek. Don’t forget! But some things should be forgotten. "שלאחריו שכחה" - namely the aveiros that you have committed and already did teshuva for. Don’t let him remind you how “bad” you once were. Only for the future you must stand vigilant, lest you forget and stumble. Amalek will attempt to break you by saying, “Just who do you think you are? You have committed so many hideous aveiros!” Do not listen. Just look forward, not back, and focus on becoming the best you can be. May we be zoche to utilize this Elul to come closer to Hashem and finally witness the death of Amalek when iy”H all will declare "והיה ה' למלך על כל הארץ".

The Amora ר' חסדא asked רמי בר תמרי why his בגד (of 4 corners) didn’t have ציצית on it. He answered that this garment was borrowed and Rav Yehuda holds a טלית שאולה is פטור מן הציצית for the first 30 days. תוס' says, מדאורייתא a טלית שאולה is פטורה מציצית for as long as the borrower has it, as it says in the posuk, "כסותך" - only on a garment that you own, is there a חיוב ציצית. However, since one doesn’t usually borrow something for longer than 30 days, the חכמים said that after 30 days, even if it is still borrowed, since it seems to people that it’s yours, you should affix ציצית to it. תוס' says, לענין ברכה one who borrows a טלית (שאינה מצוייצת,עיין רא"ש), should not make a ברכה on it. The רא"ש says, that which ר' יהודה says a טלית שאולה is פטור מציצית, is referring only to a borrowed garment that is not currently מצוייצת, on that, one need not affix ציצית. However, if one borrows a טלית מצוייצת he may make a ברכה on it because "אדעתא דהכי" it was lent to him, so that he may make a ברכה on it. And if it is only possible to make a ברכה on a טלית שלו, then we view it as if the lender gave it to him as a מתנה ע"מ להחזיר and now it isn’t a טלית שאולה but rather completely his. The רא"ש says, we are נוהג to permit one to borrow his friends טלית שלא מדעתו, because we say "ניחא ליה לאיניש דליעבד מצוה בממוניה". Therefore, if one finds the טלית folded, he must return it that way, otherwise it won’t be ניחא ליה.

The משנה ברורה says, if one borrows a טלית for the purposes of an עליה לתורה or to be the חזן or to דוכן, this לבישה is only for כבוד and therefore אין מברכין, because maybe it was lent to him only as a מלבוש and not for him to be מקיים מצות ציצית so it wasn’t given to him to be קונה (ע"מ להחזיר). However, some argue and say one does make a ברכה. He brings the דרך החיים who suggests that it’s best to have in mind not to be קונה the טלית, so לכו"ע you won’t have to make a ברכה. Except if you borrow it for תפילה, then a ברכה is required. The משנ"ב says, all this is regarding borrowing a personal טלית. However, a טלית of the קהל, one must make a ברכה on them according to everyone. Even if it is being used for an עליה, to דוכן or to be חזן. This is because the קהילה purchased it אדעתא דהכי, that it should be considered שלו, like when the קהילה purchases an אתרוג. The ביאור הלכה quotes the שערי אפרים that it’s better to use a טלית שאולה (from a יחיד), than from the ציבור, because that is a ספק if one needs a ברכה. But this is only if he is מתעטף בראשו like by שחרית, otherwise it is only a לבישה לשעתו משום כבוד בעלמא and wouldn’t need a ברכה. The ח"ח also brings the באר היטב that if the לבישה is for כבוד הציבור then אין מברכין. Many wonder why the מנהג is not to make a ברכה on a טלית של ציבור if the משנ"ב says it is required? רבבות אפרים [או"ח ס' כא] says, maybe the עולם relies on above באר היטב (no ברכה if לכבוד) and the שערי אפרים that without עיטוף הראש it’s not a לבישה. פסקי תשובות brings ר' ואזנר: since there are שיטות that even on your own טלית for לבישת כבוד one does not make a ברכה, in a case of an עליה, ברית, וכדו', in order to make a ברכה,one should cover his head, have כוונה לשם מצות ציצית and when finished he should leave it on for a little longer.

Monetary, Interpersonal Laws and Din Torah (76)

Arba Minim. Previously, we explained the requirement of owning the set of Arba Minim to fulfill one’s obligation on the first two days of Sukkos. One can fulfill this with his friend gifting him the set on the condition that he gives it back, "מתנה על מנת להחזיר". Some have a custom to lift up the set 12 inches to acquire ownership, then put it down, and lift it up again to fulfill the mitzvah with a separate “taking.” (1) However, many Poskim hold that he can accomplish the transaction and the mitzvah in one shot, as explained in Halichos Shlomo (2). As to the question of how to make monetary transactions on Shabbos and Yom Tov, the Poskim (3) answer that the Rabbinic prohibition of “kinyan” was never decreed for the immediate fulfillment of a mitzvah.

Giving Arba Minim to a Minor. One should not give his set to his son who is a minor before he himself fulfills the mitzvah (4) because the son will gain full possession when his father gives it to him, and he cannot return it to his father because the kinyan done by a minor to give to another is not valid. The father must therefore do the mitzvah himself [as well as all the other adults in the household] and then give it to the minor.

Chutz L’aretz. Outside Eretz Yisroel where there are two days of Yom Tov, we have a problem. Since we follow the strict opinion that requires one to own his set also on the second day, how can one get the set back from his son the minor, whom he gave it to on the first day? If he just lends it to his son, there is a difference of opinion amongst the Poskim (5) if one fulfills the mitzvah of chinuch with a set that does not belong to the minor. There are two ways to deal with this. One is to lend it to his son on the first day and rely on those who say that he fulfills chinuch in this manner. From Shaar Hatziyon (6) it seems he holds this is the main opinion, even for the son to say a beracha. Second is to have in mind as follows: “If the halacha is, giving my son will hinder my mitzvah tomorrow, I am lending him. If the halacha is that it will not hinder my mitzvah tomorrow, then I am giving it to him.” This year there is no Arba Minim on the first day due to Shabbos, so there is no problem and all the adults should do the mitzvah before giving it to the minor.

A true Rav recognizes that giving a Halachic ruling isn’t about saving face or appearing knowledgeable, it’s about rendering the absolute truth of the Torah. Unlike secular professions where people might feel compelled to project certainty to maintain professional credibility, a Rav knows that a incorrect ruling carries spiritual consequences.

One year, a few days before Pesach, R’ Yaakov Kamenetsky zt”l, needed to take a specific medicine and wanted to be entirely certain about the precise nature of its ingredients. Looking closely at the label, he spotted a complex chemical term and based on a logical deduction about the substance’s Latin root, he reasoned that he understood what the compound was. Still, when it came to making a decision that required absolute certainty, R’ Yaakov refused to rely solely on his own assumptions. He decided to walk down to the local pharmacy to double-check with a professional.

At the store, R’ Yaakov presented his question to the practitioner behind the counter. The pharmacist took the query seriously and began pulling heavy reference manuals and trade books from the shelves. For a long stretch of time, the man flipped through index after index, searching for the exact compound. Yet, as the minutes ticked by, it became increasingly obvious from the pharmacist’s hesitant body language that he wasn’t finding the information. Eventually, the pharmacist closed the final volume, turned to R’ Yaakov, and confidently declared that the medicine was completely fine to use.

R’ Yaakov thanked the man politely and left, but he saw right through the interaction. It was clear that the pharmacist had simply been too embarrassed to admit he didn’t know the answer. In his line of work, confessing ignorance felt like a blow to his professional standing, so he offered a reassuring answer instead of an honest one.

Reflecting on the moment afterward, R’ Yaakov pointed out to his talmidim that this encounter highlighted the profound difference between a secular professional and a true Torah authority. A professional often feels pressured to produce a quick, authoritative answer at all costs to protect their reputation, even if they have to invent something. A true Rav, however, carries a sacred responsibility where guessing is simply never an option.

To illustrate his point, R’ Yaakov shared a story about the Beis Halevi, R’ Yosef Dov Halevi Soloveitchik zt”l, from the time he was first appointed as the chief rabbi of the city of Brisk. The Beis Halevi was renowned across Europe as a towering genius whose depth of learning was practically unmatched, and the community was thrilled to have such a brilliant leader. Shortly after his arrival, a member of the town came to him with a particularly difficult question. The new Rav listened intently, paused, and then simply said, “I don’t know.” The questioner was stunned, but assumed it was just a rare oversight. Soon after, another resident brought a second issue to the rabbinical court, and to everyone’s utter shock, the Beis Halevi gave the exact same response: “I don’t know.” When it happened a third time, panic began to spread among the city leaders. The town notables quickly gathered for an emergency meeting to figure out what to do. They argued that while he might be a brilliant scholar capable of giving deep lomdish shiurim, a community needed a practical authority who could actually answer everyday questions and provide clear rulings. Regretfully, they decided they had no choice but to ask their newly hired rabbi to step down.

A delegation of prominent leaders walked to the Beis Halevi’s home to gently break the news and express their deep disappointment. Hearing their concerns, the Beis Halevi didn’t get defensive; instead, he smiled warmly and reassured them. He explained that there was no need to worry and that, moving forward, he would readily address all of their future questions.

He then revealed his true intention: he had intentionally held back his answers to establish a vital principle right at the start of his tenure. He wanted both the community and himself to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that if a moment ever came where he truly did not know an answer, he would never let pride or embarrassment push him into guessing.

For a true authority, admitting “I don’t know” isn’t a sign of weakness but the ultimate proof of integrity and responsibility.

The Gemara says, the רבנן instituted נטילת ידים before eating לחם חולין because of סרך תרומה ועוד משום מצוה. Abaye says, "מצוה לשמוע דברי חכמים". Rashi explains, the רבנן were מתקן that by touching תרומה, we treat our hands as if they are טמא (שני) and must be washed. In order to keep the כהנים in the habit of washing before they eat תרומה, we were מתקן (even for ישראלים) to always wash prior to eating חולין as well. [ד"ה מצוה] תוס' asks: why is listening to the דברי חכמים a separate מצוה? It is the רבנן who say to wash for חולין because of סרך תרומה, so it is really one reason? תוס' answers, it is really 2 reasons. 1- Because of סרך תרומה. 2- Because of נקיות.

The Mishnah [שבת יד.] says: unwashed hands are פוסל תרומה because"הידים עסקניות הם" . Rashi explains, the reason is for נקיות. Since one’s hands are always active, it is likely he touched parts of his body that are unclean and it would be a גנאי for תרומה to be handled by unclean hands as it is מאוס. So, we were מתקן that hands should be considered טמא and thus must be washed prior to eating תרומה. Rashi brings from his "רבותינו" a different reason for this תקנה due to the concern that one’s hands are actually טמא. Rashi asks 3 קשיות on this פשט and says "לא נהירא". רבינו חננאל [שם] and the רמב"ם [פירוש המשניות זבים ה-יב] explain like "רבותינו" that it’s a חשש the hands were actually טמא.

The [או"ח קס"ד,ב'] שו"ע says, if one is in middle of his סעודה and realizes that he touched parts of his גוף that are normally covered, he must wash his hands again with a ברכה. The משנ"ב brings the מהרש"ל that one does not make a ברכה again and is מכריע that if one touched a מקום מטונף ממש, or went to he בית הכסא (גדולים), he makes another ברכה. If one just touched a part that is usually covered or went to the בית הכסא (קטנים), he washes again, but without a ברכה. In ביאור הלכה he brings the פרי מגדים that this הלכה is תלוי in our מחלוקת between רש"י and רבותינו. According to רש"י, one would need to make a new ברכה since נקיות is the עיקר טעם why we wash for תרומה (hands are עסקניות and probably touched מקום מטונפת). But according to רבותינו (and the רמב"ם) one would not need to make a new ברכה because the original תקנה was for a חשש maybe one touched a ראשון לטומאהso his hands are a שני and because of סרך תרומה we wash for חולין as well. But if one is sure and was careful not to touch טומאה but only touched a מקום מטונף in middle of his סעודה, he should not have to make a ברכה. The ביאור הלכה finds it difficult that the שו"ע would not pasken like the רבותינו, רמב"ם, ר"ח and therefore argues on the understanding of the פרי מגדים. ע"ש

The [או"ח קנ"ח,י'] שו"ע says even though the שיעור for נטל"י is a רביעית, one should wash with a lot of water. Because ר' חסדא said "אנא משאי מלא חפני מיא ויהבו לי מלא חפני טיבותא" - I washed with a lot of water and was given a lot of טובא. The משנ"ב says even so, לכתחילה it is better not to wash like this for this reason, because it would be ע"מ לקבל פרס. Rather one should do everything לכבוד השי"ת and the שכר will come ממילא. If one is זהיר in this practice yet doesn’t receive עשירות, it is because "מעשיו מעכבין".

The fourth Haftorah of consolation depicts Yeshaya HaNavi exhorting Klal Yisroel to always remain true to Hashem and never lose sight of their goal in this world - serving Hashem with complete conviction and devotion. Interestingly, the word "עורי" - “awaken” was used twice by the Navi while underscoring his point, so what is the significance of this double wording?

R’ Shlomo Ephraim Luntschitz zt”l (Kli Yakar) explains that Yeshaya HaNavi had prayed to Hashem earlier to come to the aid of the suffering Jewish people in exile. Hashem responded that when Klal Yisroel “awakens” from their spiritual to slumber, then, and only then, will He come to their assistance and bring Mashiach. For Bnei Yisroel in exile, “awakening” to someone saying that their redemption was imminent seemed more like a fantasy than reality. Nevertheless, this “awakening” was imperative to the coming of Mashiach and so the Navi tried to get the Nation to “wake up” out of their despair and then “awaken” and redefine their priorities to reflect their old feelings of devotion to Hashem.

In times of uncertainty, people tend to look upward and wonder why calamities happen. They question Hashem’s plan and seek ways to artificially alter them. They forget that Hashem is the master of the world and no human being will ever be able to “change His mind” on anything. However, Hashem has left one avenue open to try an influence His decision - the awe-inspiring power of teshuva.

The Torah dictates that the Jewish monarch, the melech of Klal Yisroel, must have a Sefer Torah present with him at all times, lest he become too haughty. The Ramban notes that herein lies a remez regarding the issur of ga’avah, if even the king must stay far away from this terrible middah, then most certainly common folk must do so as well. The Sefas Emes asks: why did the Ramban have to wait until this parsha to point this out? Earlier (8:11:17), the Torah already admonishes us in a similar vein: "השמר לך פן תשכח את ה' אלקיך... The Torah warns that a person who is doing well financially must be vigilant not to forget Hashem, ch”v, and claim that it was their own wisdom and smarts that earned them their wealth. What did the Ramban see here beyond what was already stated in Eikev?

The velt answers with a sadly comical story. There was once a gabbai who overheard a chashuva, “mizrach-vant” type of fellow davening and deeply emphasizing Hashem’s greatness while describing how low he himself was as a person. Thinking that this fellow possessed unparalleled humility and truly felt so little of himself, the gabbai decided that instead of giving him Shishi or another honorable aliyah, he would just call him up for a simple, ordinary aliyah. After davening, the distinguished anav was furious and approached the gabbai demanding an explanation. The gabbai excused himself and said, “I overheard your beautiful davening...” to which the man replied, “You’re right. In relation to Hashem, I am nothing. But yenem, the other guy? He is mamash nothing compared to me!” This explains why both warnings are needed. In Parshas Eikev, the Torah warns against "ושכחת את ה'" but a separate warning was still needed here in Shoftim regarding a fellow Yid: "לבלתי רם לבבו מאחיו". This teaches us the vital importance of both bein adam laMakom and bein adam lachaveiro. As Elul commences, let us, b’ezras Hashem and with much siyata dishmaya, work on both, living a life of true shleimus and honesty.

MASHAL:
A young man got married, drawing family from far and wide. Among the guests was a distant uncle who was completely disconnected from his Jewish heritage. Set in his secular ways, he had long rebuffed any attempts to bring him closer to Judaism. During the wedding, a warm and perceptive Rosh Kollel noticed the uncle. Determined to awaken the man’s dormant soul, the rabbi purposefully drew him into the center of the dancing. The uncle felt genuinely embraced, forming an instant bond with the rabbi.

Hoping to nurture this unexpected connection, the family later asked the Rosh Kollel to call him. The rabbi obliged, but the conversation quickly stalled. It was the month of Elul, and noticing a shofar on his desk, the rabbi had an idea. Over the phone, he blew the traditional blasts and asked if the sounds were familiar. The uncle quietly said yes, and then hung up.

Years later, at the bar mitzvah of the original chosson’s son, an unfamiliar, fully observant man approached the Rosh Kollel. It was the distant uncle. Astonished, the rabbi asked him what had ignited his transformation. “It was the shofar,” the uncle revealed. “Those sounds shook me to my core. I couldn’t continue my old life. I grabbed onto that moment and never let go.” Today, thanks to a few simple blasts, he and his entire family live beautiful, committed Jewish lives.

NIMSHAL:
“Judges and officers you shall appoint in all your gates.” Now in Elul, our eyes, our ears, and our mouth are our ‘gates.’ The Torah is teaching us to set up internal judges (our conscience and hashkafa) and officers (our discipline and willpower) to govern what enters and exits these gates.

Monetary, Interpersonal Laws and Din Torah (75)

Monetary Laws. In the series we started last week discussing monetary topics relevant to the Yom Tov of Sukkos, we explained the way to buy the Arba Minim so that it correctly belongs to the buyer and he fulfills the requirement of"לכם" (owning items of mitzvah) which is required on the first two days of Sukkos. [This year when the first day of Yom Tov is on Shabbos and we don’t take Lulav and Esrog, it is relevant for the second day.] Let us continue with this monetary requirement of "לכם".

Partnership. If two or more people jointly buy a set of Arba Minim for the sake of the mitzvah, they can both [or all] be yotze one after the other. Since it was purchased for the sake of the mitzvah, each “partner” agrees that it should belong to each one completely when he picks it up for the mitzvah. In this case there is still a preference for each partner to say to the other as he lifts it up that he is clearly gifting the set to the other as a present with a condition to return it (מתנה על מנת להחזיר) as explained in Mishna Berura (1). I remember one year when a few talmidei chachamim did this as they could not afford to buy it separately. In our case of partnership, there would be a preference that each should daven at a different minyan at a different time so that each one will be able to to do the נענועים - the appropriate shaking of the four minim - during the reciting of Hallel (2).

Using Another’s Arba Minim. If one needs to fulfill the mitzvah with another person’s set, he can ask him to give him a מתנה ע"מ להחזיר. Then it is deemed “owned” by the receiver if he gives it back afterwards, when the original owner needs it. Although it is better to speak out clearly that it is a מתנה ע"מ להחזיר, if he did not, it’s like he said it since that’s what people do in such circumstances (3). When one returns the lulav set to the owner, it must be returned in a transactional manner by giving it back into the hands of the owner, not just putting it down somewhere (4). In fact, some Poskim (5) hold that he should say, “I am gifting this set back to you to be yours forever.” The Shaar Hatziyon (6) argues that it is enough just to give it back into his hands without saying anything. It is assumed that he is giving it back in a valid way to become his forever.

The Torah forbids planting an Asherah - a tree used for idol worship - next to the Mizbeach. While the literal prohibition against planting idolatrous trees near an altar seems distant from modern daily life, its broader message remains painfully relevant: we must not mix the profane with the sacred. Unfortunately, this blend of the holy and the secular creeps into even our vibrantly frum world. Consider neginah (song), one of Klal Yisroel’s most elevated spiritual tools. The Vilna Gaon zt”l teaches that the heichal of neginah in shamayim sits right alongside the heichal of teshuvah. Through a pure, holy niggun, a person can reach immense spiritual heights, stirring joy and yearning for closeness to Hashem. Yet today, this sacred tool has been hijacked. Under the thin guise of Hebrew or Yiddish lyrics, musical styles drawn from the lowest cultural elements have infiltrated our simchos, cars, and personal devices. Non-Jewish music frequently serves as wedding intros. Dance floors, once reserved for the exalted mitzvah of rejoicing with a chosson and kallah, often resemble wild disco clubs, filled with rowdy gyrating that expresses everything except spirituality. Is this not planting an Asherah tree in the middle of the Bais HaMikdash?

A respected yeshivah mashgiach once shared that while visiting a kiruv camp, he learned they had a psak allowing music during the Three Weeks due to their unique atmosphere. Upon hearing the song selection, he remarked that he fully understood the ruling: modern music reflects the tragedy of galus so deeply that listening to it is entirely fitting for mourning the Churban.

In another instance, an ostensibly heimish musician played heavy electronic club music at a wedding despite explicit instructions not to. When confronted by the baal simcha, he answered, “What should I do? I have a reputation to uphold!” It is tragic when an unrefined musician whose life revolves around a keyboard dictates the spiritual atmosphere of a Jewish celebration.

As Elul and the season of teshuvah arrive, let us be mischazeik ourselves. We must purge such music from our playlists and simchos, removing all modern “Asherahs” from our lives so we may approach Hashem pure, clean, and ready for forgiveness.
