Know That Hashem Loves You!
The purpose of Yetzias Mitzrayim is so that Jewish people, for all generations, will come to "וידעתם" - the knowledge that Hashem is the G-d of Klal Yisroel. Thus, we relate it “in the ears of our sons and grandsons” for then it will always remain an integral part of our heritage. (Sefas Emes)
On one occasion, when the Israeli Prime Minister traveled to the U.S. to meet with government officials and request assistance and support, he was confronted by a senior American official who resented what the Jewish homeland of Israel stood for. “Tell me, Mr. Prime Minister,” said the official, “who exactly does your little country represent? Do you represent the Jews of Poland? Perhaps Yemen, Romania, Morocco, Iraq, Russia or Brazil? After 2000 years of exile can you speak of one unified nation, with one culture, one heritage or perhaps one, singular Jewish tradition?”
The Prime Minister was not flustered. He smiled and replied, “Over 300 years ago, a ship called the Mayflower set sail from England, and on it were the first settlers of what would become the largest democratic country in the world. Now, do me a favor; go outside and find 10 American children and ask them the following: What was the name of the captain of the Mayflower? How long did the voyage take? What did they eat? How did they live? You will agree with me that you won’t get a good answer to these questions.
“On the other hand, not 300 but over 3000 years ago, the Jewish people left the Land of Egypt. Sir, on one of your next official trips around the world, try and meet 10 Jewish children from 10 different countries and ask them: What was the name of the leader who took the Jews out of Egypt? How long did it take them to get out? What did they eat while they were wandering in the desert? And what happened when they were blocked by the sea? When you get the answers to these questions - and you most certainly will - please care- fully consider the questions that you have just asked me!”
