R’ Dovid Yisroel Ber Kaufmann zt”l (Reflections of Redemption) would say:
“The Torah reading of Korach and the incidents of Gimmel Tammuz contain a valuable lesson for us. Each event that occurred on 3 Tammuz began with a denial of the leader as the unifying intermediary. Korach rebelled against Moshe, the sun protested against Yehoshua, and the communists imprisoned the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe zt”l. Each event eventually led to a greater revelation of G-dliness with the world. Neither natural phenomenon nor the actions of man can truly hinder a Jew’s Divine service. Through these tests we are to reach a stronger and higher level of Divine service. Then for the Jews, and indeed the whole world, there will be light and joy, gladness and honor.”
