Lakewood Mashgiach, R’ Nosson Meir Wachtfogel zt”l (Leket Reshimos) would say:
“The Avodah of the Nine Days is to work on our ‘Power of Imagination.’ A Jew must use all his creative imagination to picture what Yerushalayim and the Bais HaMikdash looked like during those glorious times. How the kohanim dressed in their priestly garments; how the city sparkled with beauty and holiness; how the Levi’im sang their rousing melodies; how the Land of Israel shone in its splendor and magnificence. If one will be able to recreate this picture in his mind, the thought of the destruction of the Bais HaMikdash will shatter him and finally now he is ready to correctly mourn the Churban.”
