Parshas Bamidbar - Chag HaShavuos 5785

ree

R’ Yehonosan Eibeschutz zt”l (Nefesh Yehonosan) would say: “'ילד בן לנעמי ותקראנה שמו עובד' - Everyone considered the birth of Rus’ child as Hashem’s reward to Naomi for leading Rus in the right path. In order to always remember that, ‘a son is born to Naomi,’ they called him Oved because the middle letter of Naomi (נעמי) is an “ayin”, the word ben (בן) starts with “beis” and the final letter of ‘yulad’ (ילד) is a “daled.” Thus, they gave him a name which 'לאמר' - the name would say, ‘a son is born to Naomi.’ They reversed the sequence of the letters and named him Oved as a blessing that the child would serve (עובד) Hashem with a full heart.”

R’ Avraham Weinberg of Slonim zt”l (Be’er Avraham) would say:

“Al pi Kabbalah, each month of the year corresponds to a different major body part. This month, Sivan, corresponds to the left ear. The reason is because all year long, the dvar Hashem goes in the right ear and out the other. However, when the Torah is given on Shavuos, we must hear it and retain it with both ears - even the left one!”
